  • Job Summary:

    Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the Forensic Nurse Coordinator assumes accountability and responsibility for forensic activities while maintaining responsibility as defined in the RN job description. Responsibilities include oversight of day to day operations, scheduling, monitoring of fiscal, educational and human resource process improvements. Participates in and accepts responsibilities delegated by the Director. Utilizes and acquires knowledge of current and best practices in the specified clinical and management areas of nursing. This incumbent promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, while striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources.

    Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

    Quality

    Identifies, coordinates, and collaborates for process improvement opportunities for Forensic Services. Participates in leadership activities to ensure service-oriented, quality, effective, safe continuity of patient care such as Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/PI) initiatives documented and action plans are initiated. Promotes the use of best practice by promoting the use of evidence based nursing/best practices. Develops, implements, and monitors (including direct observation) standards of practice for optimal patient outcomes. Demonstrates objective communication with patient, family, Physicians, Associates, and Nurse Manager. Maintains clinical competencies and is able to provide direct nursing care to patients. Collaborates with Associates and Management to support compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies and the JCAHO

    People

    Actively participates in the creation and maintenance of staff schedules

    Participates and facilitates new Associate orientation, education and evaluation. In collaboration with Director, reviews, monitors, and documents competencies, progressive disciplinary action and performance

    Accountable and responsible for self professional growth and development and is a role model by integrating components of the professional role. Service

    Provides care in a compassionate manner, adjusting timing of procedures as needed to meet the psychological and physical needs of the patient. Identified and facilitates care for injuries that require medical treatment. Collects, processes, and maintains appropriate chain of custody of both clinical and non-clinical evidence and necessary records. Documents assessment, evidence collection, and interventions with careful attention to legal consideration. Provides crisis intervention

    Provides patient education regarding examination, procedures, post exposure pregnancy and STD prevention, follow-up care, HIV and other STD testing, an rape-trauma syndrome. Conducts activities with attention to patient right of privacy and confidentiality

    Serves as a role model for MWHC's service standards. Finance

    Provides input to the Director in preparation and justification of annual operating and capital budget requests.

    Participates and coordinates effective use of care resources to include staff, material, and fiscal resource

    Community

    Coordinates with law enforcement and sexual assault groups as part of the SART team

    Participates in the education of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, health care providers, law enforcement and the public as necessary

    Provides testimony, when requested, on examination procedures and findings. Participate in out-reach and community education activities. Participate in necessary meeting and committee work.

    Qualifications:

    Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing, BSN required

    Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia or awaiting reciprocity with Forensic Nurse Examiner experience. Successful completion of an Adult Sexual Nurse Examiner/Forensic Nurse Course and clinical components

    Successful completion of a Pediatric Sexual Nurse Examiner/Forensic Nurse Course and clinical components

    Minimum of three years staff nurse experience required, previous leadership experience required

    Membership in a professional organization strongly preferred

    Maintains CPR

    Must be able to respond to exam site at Mary Washington Hospital within 60 minutes

    Must have own transportation

    Must be available to take on call time

    Demonstrates proficiency in verbal and written communication; as well as computerized systems

    Ability to work in stressful environments

    Demonstrates collaboration with physician, staff, MWHC Associates, law enforcement and other governmental and community organizations. Demonstrates ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives

    Demonstrates ability to organize and present content
