DEFINITION: The STAFF RN is a registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated shift. He/she prescribes nursing care based on the nursing process that is consistent with the medical plan of care and is based on input from the patient and significant others. He/she collaborates with the physicians and other members of the health care team and coordinates the delivery of patient care to patients of any age (depending on assigned unit) including neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric. The RN incorporates teaching and discharge planning needs in the overall plan of care. He/she delegates certain aspects of patient care delivery to other nursing staff based on their current clinical competence and legal scope of practice.
The CHARGE RN is assigned to oversee unit operation, the delegation of nursing care to patients and the supervision of nursing staff on an assigned shift. He/she has responsibility and accountability for the coordination of patient care in collaboration with members of the medical staff and all members of the health care team.
Specific clinical requirements per assigned unit as follows:
ALL Units Admitting Telemetry
Dysrhythmia recognition course or demonstrated competency and
ACLS required within 1 yr.
Critical Care Units
Dysrhythmia recognition course or demonstrated competency and ACLS required within 1 yr. ICUs require completion of Critical Care Course within 1 year. Demonstrated competency in IV Sedation within 6 months.
Neonatal Resuscitation required within 6 months for Nursery / NICU and Labor and Delivery. Adv. Fetal Monitoring required within 6 months for L&D. Pitocin Induction course during L & D orientation (plus annual competency validation). L&D – If Basic Fetal Monitoring acquired within 3 months, Advanced Fetal Monitoring within 1 year and ACLS within 1 year. NRP within 6 months and PCEP within 1 year.
PALS certification required within 1 year.
ACLS and PALS certification required within 1 year.
Chemotherapy competence and PICC competence, Oncology certification preferred
Endoscopy, Interventional Radiology RN
ACLS and PALS within 1 year. IV Sedation within 6 months
Previous acute care experience in designated specialty or area or in a related clinical specialty
Valid California RN License or Interim Permit
