Genetics Cancer Counselor

  • POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Genetic Counselor is responsible for the delivery of services and resources for the genetic counseling, evaluation and follow-up of individuals and family members suspected to have an inherited predisposition to cancer.

    In this role, you will:

    Identify and counsel individuals and families at risk of familial and hereditary cancer syndromes.

    Be responsible for community outreach activities,

    Attend Tumor Board Conference

    Have the ability to act independently

    Under the supervision of the Medical Oncologist, Exercise independent judgment in gathering information from the patient and referring physician

    POSITION EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Analyze genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders and syndromes

    Write detailed consultation reports to provide information on complex genetic concepts for patients or referring physicians

    Discuss testing options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients and families

    Interview patients to obtain comprehensive medical histories and document the findings

    Interpret laboratory results and communicate findings to patients or physicians

    Counsel patients and family members by providing information, education, or reassurance regarding genetic risks and inherited conditions

    Determine patient treatment plans by reviewing laboratory work, literature, and patient histories

    Participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in genetics and genomics

    Write detailed consultation reports to provide information on complex genetic concepts for patients or referring physicians

    Discuss testing options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients and families

    Ability to communicate complex findings so that patients can understand the magnitude of a health problem

    MINIMUM EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE:

    Graduate of an accredited genetic counseling program with a Master's degree in Genetic counseling. Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American College of Medical Genetics(ACMG). Knowledge acquired through education and/or work experience in Cancer Services Department, Cancer Genetic Counseling. Successful completion of clinical rotation in an accredited genetic counseling training program. Three or more years of clinical experience preferred. Use of PC applications and databases. Experience with Progeny and an electronic medical record (Greenway) is desired.

    Licensure/Regulation/Certification:

    Licensed Certified Genetic Counselor

    *Selected candidate will be employed by BocaCare, Inc Physician Network, an affiliate of Boca Raton Regional Hospital*
    *Incumbent may be required to perform emergency duty before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency, crisis situation or disaster (man-made or natural) including evacuation sites. *The person in this position will work in a smoke-free location, and is expected to adhere to all smoking restrictions.
    *In the spirit of wellness for both our employees and patients, Boca Raton Regional Hospital has instituted a mandatory influenza prevention vaccination program. Current employees must receive the influenza prevention vaccination free of charge during the recognized flu season. As a condition of employment, new hires will be required to comply with all program rules. This is a mandatory program with the exception of documented medical or religious reasons for not receiving the vaccine.
