  • The Speech Language Pathologist delivers patient care through the process of evaluation, planning, and implementation, and other duties as assigned.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1.

    Functions within the limits of the Licensure Act for Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists and performs in a comparable manner to peers with similar training, experience, and circumstances. 2.

    Follows policy and procedure for cognitive rehabilitation. Demonstrates knowledge of complications and use of critical thinking skills in preventing and correcting any problems.

    3.

    Observes consideration of particulars of the patient population served (such as age, developmental and educational levels, disabilities, language skills, gender and cultural/ethnic background) that may influence the performance of skills. Documentation of procedures thorough and specific to patient.

    4.

    Use of "Talking Trach": Ability to follow policy and procedure for use of "Talking Trach". Demonstrates knowledge of complications and use of critical thinking skills in preventing and correcting any problems. 5.

    Assists the family and home care team in understanding the nature of the communication abilities that remain intact. Involves the patient and family/caregivers in the treatment plan and discharge planning.

    6.

    Conducts evaluation of the patient's speech, language, motor, and swallowing functions within the patient's environment by following established guidelines, formulates a plan of treatment, and submits to the patient's physician.

    7.

    Consults regularly with patient's physician regarding plan of treatment, reporting any changes in condition or home environment.

    8.

    Maintains productivity standards and attends required in-services by performing duties in an efficient and effective manner.

    9.

    Participates in staff development activities in developing staff awareness of overall role of Speech Language Pathologist.

    10. Provides safe, competent, age-appropriate care and completes documentation within established time frames.
    11. Reports all accidents or unusual symptoms of patients to the Rehab or nurse manager.
    12. Uses structured and unstructured therapy procedures to bring the patient to a maximum functional communication level.

    Education

    MS or MA degree in Speech Pathology, Speech Science, or Communication Disorders from an accredited university required.

    Minimum Work Experience

    Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute care hospital required. Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute rehab facility or equivalent serving the adult population required. Six (6) months home care experience preferred. Computer skills preferred.

    Certification/Licenses

    A valid Driver's license is required.

    American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification

    Current license as a Speech Language Pathologist in the state of Missouri. Certification of clinical competence by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

    Mental/Physical Requirements

    (May be met with appropriate accommodations if deemed necessary): Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and to walk up and down flights of stairs. Ability to receive and express detailed information through oral communications, visual acuity, and the ability to read and understand written directions. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to safely operate an automobile.

    Drive: 2-4 hrs. per day

    Must be able to maneuver around architectural barriers and obstructions in patient's home. Must be able to tolerate temperature changes, smoke, fumes, dust and pets found in patient's home.

    Working Conditions

    Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and body fluids. Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and hostile persons at times. Works with sharps and other potentially biohazardous materials. Variation in environmental temperatures. Exposure to various community environments.
