Neuro Spinal

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team based in the department of Neurosurgery, managing the neuro spinal patient population in the outpatient setting at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center (MMMC). Primary responsibility involves the coordination and triage of care for patients referred for neuro spinal evaluation.  Specifically, this senior level role requires preliminary assessment of the patient's presenting clinical problem in the context of outside imaging and other testing performed, toward determining the need for further diagnostic testing to be attained prior to proper triage and disposition of the patient for neurosurgical evaluation.  In collaboration with the attending neurosurgeon, the NP determines the need for any additional subspecialty physician consultation prior to surgery. Responsible for ensuring adherence to national clinical guidelines/protocols and ensuring an environment of safe quality care. The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation.  The NP is responsible for professional development and competency validation. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: B.S.N. and M.S.N. from an accredited School of Nursing. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.  

LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: State Licensure in Maryland as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner certification with prescriptive privileges. BLS Certification. 

EXPERIENCE: Three years of nursing experience in the area of Neurosciences, inclusive of at least one year of directly related experience in neuro ortho.
