Manager, Pharmacy Operations Basic Purpose: The Manager of Operations of the
Department of Pharmacy Services will assist the Director in all aspects of the day to day
operations of the Department to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of medications and
pharmaceutical care to our patients. This individual must demonstrate a commitment of
quality service to our patients, the public, and our
co-workers. _____________________________________________________________________ Major
Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Monitors automated systems, computer systems, and
packaging and compounding machines to ensure proper functioning. 2. Performs the
functions of a pharmacist within the Department. 3. Directs workflow and to ensure that
medications are delivered on time. 4. Communicates with Division Chiefs to ensure (i.e.,
sterile compounding, packaging and production, drug distribution, and inventory control)
that the Department is meeting the needs of our patients in a timely and cost-effective
manner. 5. Works with the Director and the Clinical Coordinator to implement and sustain
automatic therapeutic interchanges, IV to PO conversions and other cost containment
programs sanctioned by the P&T Committee. 6. Has the responsibilities of "Super User and
Trainer" of software, automation, and packaging and compounding equipment in the
Department. 7. Assists with the development and implementation of Competency Based
Orientation Tools (CBOTs) and other training materials for the distributive functions in
the Pharmacy and ensures training is documented. 8. Assists the Director with Annual
Performance Appraisals of staff pharmacists. 9. Implements and enforces Departmental
policies and procedures. 10. Implements and maintains performance improvement projects in
coordination with the Performance Improvement Coordinator. 11. Communicates and
coordinates with Human Resources regarding matters relevant to discipline, recruitment,
and promotion and retention. 12. Coordinates work schedules, paid annual leave, and sick
leave for all pharmacists and technicians. 13. Monitors checking of squad boxes, code
carts, squad narcotic boxes and clot boxes, and works with local and regional EMS
providers. 14. Coordinates pre-packaged medication review. 15. Resolves problems related
to operations or drug distribution. 16. Represents the Department on Committees when
requested to do by the Director. 17. Enforces and documents compliance with the CE
requirements of the Board of Pharmacy. 18. Teaches and precepts student in the
Department's Pharmacy Technician program. 19. Reviews regulations and stipulations
promulgated by the Joint Commission and the USP. 20. Assesses the Department's compliance
with the aforementioned regulations and stipulations. 21. Complies with other reasonable
and prudent duties and responsibilities assigned by the Director of
Pharmacy. _____________________________________________________________________ Qualifications: 1. Must
hold a license, or be eligible to hold a license, to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth
of Virginia. 2. Must have at least seven years of practical experience as a hospital
pharmacist or must have completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency with an advanced
ASHP-accredited residency in Hospital Pharmacy Administration. 3. Must have experience
with pharmacy computers and automation. 4. Must have at least five years of experience in
pharmacy management. 5. Must have good skills in interpersonal communications and
organizational matters.
